Amazon FBA Requirements for Products from China

A checklist for Amazon FBA sellers sourcing from China. We cover labeling, packaging, and shipping requirements to ensure your goods aren't rejected at the FBA dock.

For an Amazon FBA seller, the production line in China is only the first half of the battle. The second half is ensuring those goods meet Amazon's rigid "Fulfillment by Amazon" (FBA) requirements. Amazon operates at such a massive scale that they have zero tolerance for labeling errors, oversized cartons, or missing documentation.

If your shipment doesn't follow the rules, Amazon will either charge you a "prep fee," or worse, refuse the shipment and send it back to China at your expense. This guide details the non-negotiable requirements for FBA goods coming from China.

1. Product Labeling Requirements

Every single unit you sell must have a scannable barcode that allows Amazon to identify it.

  • FNSKU (Fulfillment Network Stock Keeping Unit): This is the most common label for FBA. It links the product specifically to your seller account. It must be printed clearly in black ink on a white, non-reflective label.
  • Placement: The label must be placed on a flat surface of the product's outer packaging. It must NOT be placed over a seam, a corner, or a curved surface that would make it difficult to scan.
  • Covering Original Barcodes: If your factory’s packaging already has a UPC or EAN barcode, the FNSKU must be placed directly over it so that only one barcode is visible to the scanner.

2. Packaging for the "FBA Journey"

Amazon’s warehouses are highly automated. Your packaging must be "Frustration-Free" but also robust enough to survive the warehouse belts.

  • Polybagging: Any product that is "soft" (like apparel) or has a plush surface must be placed in a transparent polybag. If the bag opening is 5 inches or larger, it must have a suffocation warning printed on it.
  • Sold as Set: If your product consists of multiple parts (e.g., a camera and a tripod), they must be contained in a single package. You must apply a label that clearly states "Sold as Set" or "Ready to Ship" so the warehouse staff doesn't open the box.
  • Bubble Wrap: Fragile items (glass, ceramics) must be wrapped in bubble wrap and be able to pass a "3-foot drop test" onto a hard surface without breaking.

3. Shipping Carton Requirements

The master cartons that leave the factory in China must also follow strict size and weight rules.

  • Weight Limit: In the US, a standard FBA master carton must not exceed 50 lbs (22.5 kg) unless it contains a single oversized item. If it exceeds 50 lbs, you must apply "Team Lift" labels on all sides.
  • Size Limit: Master cartons should not exceed 25 inches (63.5 cm) on any one side.
  • Carton Labeling: Every master carton must have a unique FBA Box ID label (generated from your Seller Central account). These should be placed on a side—not on the top where the tape will be cut.

4. Documentation and Importer of Record

As discussed in our Incoterms guide, Amazon will NOT act as the Importer of Record (IOR).

  • DDP Shipping: We highly recommend shipping via DDP (Delivered Duty Paid). This ensures that all customs clearance and tariffs are paid before the goods arrive at Amazon.
  • Commercial Invoice: Ensure your commercial invoice correctly lists the HTS codes and does not list Amazon as the buyer (you are the buyer; Amazon is just the delivery location).

How to Prevent Errors at the Factory Level

Your factory in China may say they "know the FBA rules," but you should never take their word for it.

  1. Provide Label Templates: Do not ask the factory to "make the labels." Download the FNSKU and Box ID labels from Seller Central and send them as PDFs.
  2. Conduct a Pre-Shipment Inspection: Instruct your inspector to physically scan 10-20 labels with a smartphone to ensure they lead to the correct ASIN.
  3. Photos are Mandatory: Ask the factory for photos of the individual product labels, the "Sold as Set" labels, and the final labeled master cartons before they are loaded.

Conclusion

The FBA warehouse is a high-speed environment where small mistakes lead to big delays. By treating FBA compliance as a core part of your quality control process, you can ensure that your goods move from the factory in China to the Amazon customer's doorstep with zero friction.
